Endometriosis affects many women, but diagnosis can sometimes take years. One of the most common questions patients ask is whether ultrasound can detect endometriosis.
The answer is that ultrasound can help identify some signs of endometriosis, but not all endometriosis is visible on a scan.
What can ultrasound show?
A specialist pelvic ultrasound may identify:
- Ovarian endometriomas
- Features of deep endometriosis
- Fibroids
- Ovarian cysts
- Adenomyosis features
- Other possible causes of pelvic pain
Can a normal scan rule out endometriosis?
No. Some forms of endometriosis cannot easily be seen on ultrasound.
This means symptoms still matter greatly, especially if you experience:
- Severe period pain
- Pain during sex
- Pelvic pain outside your period
- Heavy bleeding
- Bowel symptoms linked to your cycle
- Fatigue
When should you seek help?
If symptoms are affecting your daily life, it is reasonable to seek specialist advice even if previous scans were normal.
